How to Reset a Frigidaire Fridge Filter Light
Every Frigidaire refrigerator with a water filter has the same small trap built in: fitting the new cartridge does not clear the filter light. The indicator is a reminder clock, not a sensor — it keeps counting the old filter’s life until you tell it, by hand, that a new one is in. This guide is the Frigidaire-only version of that reset, covering the PurePour PWF-1 models most people own.
Before you reset: the 60-second order of operations
Resetting is the last step of a filter change, never a substitute for one:
- Fit the new filter fully — pushed straight in until it clicks against the snap-in connector. A cartridge a fraction short of the click is the most common reason a reset “doesn’t take”.
- Flush the new filter: press a glass against the dispenser for about 3–4 minutes (roughly 1.5 gallons) to clear carbon fines and purge trapped air. Sputtering at this stage is completely normal.
- Close the fridge door — many panels ignore presses made with the door open.
- Then reset, using the panel type below that matches your fridge.
The reset itself: hold the Water Filter button 3 seconds
On most Frigidaire models, the control panel has a button labelled “Water Filter” or “Filter Reset”:
- Find it on the control panel — on PurePour models it sits beside the filter status indicator.
- Press and hold it for a full 3 seconds — count it out slowly. A quick tap does nothing on these panels.
- Release when the status indicator changes from red back to green.
That is the same finish used at the end of our How to Replace the Frigidaire FPPWFU01 (PWF-1) walkthrough — if you are mid-change rather than just resetting, follow that guide for the swap itself.
Which panel does your Frigidaire have?
| What you see | Where the reset lives |
|---|---|
| A “Water Filter” button on the control panel (most PurePour PWF-1 models) | Press and hold it 3 seconds — the status changes from red to green |
| Filter status shown on a display screen | Open the filter status area and follow the on-screen reset prompt |
| No filter button at all | The reset is a control combination specific to that model — see below |
What if there is no reset button at all?
A minority of Frigidaire models reset through a combination of dispenser controls instead of a dedicated button. That combination is specific to the model, and guessing sequences from the internet can change other settings — use the combination printed in your manual’s control section. Once you have done it once, write the combination on the same note as your filter’s part number so you never hunt for it again.
Reset done — is your filter the genuine PurePour?
The reset only keeps its schedule honest if the cartridge inside is the genuine factory part. The genuine Frigidaire FPPWFU01 PurePour PWF-1 is the exact-fit OEM cartridge — NSF/ANSI 42 + 53 certified, push-to-lock, from $36.99 with free US shipping and 30-day free returns. When you compare discount refrigerator water filters, the part number on your old cartridge matters more than the price tag — the genuine PWF-1 is the one that fits.
Two more pages worth your time before you buy:
- Frigidaire combo kit: water + air filter in one box — the kit saves you $6.99 over buying the two filters separately.
- FPPWFU01 vs ULTRAWF: which one fits? — the two model numbers look similar and are not interchangeable.

FAQ
Does fitting a new filter reset a Frigidaire filter light automatically?
No. The indicator is a reminder clock, not a sensor. Fit and flush the new filter first (about 1.5 gallons), then hold the Water Filter / Filter Reset button for a full 3 seconds with the door closed.
How long do I hold the Frigidaire filter reset button?
A full, slow 3 seconds. A quick tap is the most common reason a reset appears to fail.
My Frigidaire has no Filter Reset button. How do I reset the light?
Your model uses a dispenser-control combination specific to that model, or a reset inside its filter status display. Use the combination or prompt from your manual’s control section — do not guess sequences, as they can alter other settings.
What does red versus green mean on the Frigidaire filter indicator?
Green means the filter clock is fresh; red means the reminder has expired and the cartridge is due. The colour reflects elapsed time, not water quality — it cannot detect a worn filter early or a fresh one late.
The light reset fine but came back early. What does that mean?
First re-check that the cartridge clicked fully into its connector, then reset once more. If it still returns early, work through the checks in our “still red” troubleshooting hub linked above before assuming the new filter is faulty — it almost never is.
