Every Maytag refrigerator with a water filter has the same small trap built in: fitting the new cartridge does not clear the filter light. The indicator is a reminder clock, not a sensor — it keeps counting the old filter’s life until you tell it, by hand, that a new one is in. This guide is the Maytag-only version of that reset.

Before you reset: the 60-second order of operations

Resetting is the last step of a filter change, never a substitute for one:

  1. Fit the new filter fully — pushed or quarter-turned until it locks. A cartridge a fraction short of locked is the most common reason a reset “doesn’t take”.
  2. Flush the new filter as its guide directs to clear carbon fines and purge trapped air.
  3. Close the fridge door — many panels ignore presses made with the door open.
  4. Then reset, using the panel type below that matches your fridge.

The reset itself: hold the Filter Reset button 3 seconds

On most Maytag models, the dispenser or control panel has a button labelled “Filter Reset” or “Water Filter”:

  1. Find it on the panel — on some models it sits inside the interior controls rather than on the dispenser.
  2. Press and hold it for a full 3 seconds — count it out slowly. A quick tap does nothing on these panels.
  3. Release when the indicator turns off, changes back to its normal colour, or the filter status display returns to “good”.

That is the same finish used at the end of our How to Replace the EveryDrop Filter 4 (EDR4RXD1 / UKF8001) walkthrough — if you are mid-change rather than just resetting, follow that guide for the swap itself.

Which panel does your Maytag have?

What you seeWhere the reset lives
A “Filter Reset” or “Water Filter” button on the panel (most models)Press and hold it 3 seconds — the light goes out or back to its normal colour
Filter status shown on a display screenOpen the filter status area and follow the on-screen reset prompt
No filter button at allThe reset is a control combination specific to that model — see below

What if there is no reset button at all?

A minority of Maytag models reset through a combination of dispenser controls instead of a dedicated button. That combination is specific to the model, and guessing sequences from the internet can change other settings — use the combination printed in your manual’s control section. This is a manual lookup, not a defect: once you have done it once, write the combination on the same note as your filter’s part number.

Reset done — which filter should the light be timing?

Maytag fridges take different EveryDrop filters depending on the model, so the part number on your old cartridge is always the final word. One of the most common: if your cartridge says UKF8001, that is EveryDrop Filter 4 — EDR4RXD1 ($39.99, free US shipping, 30-day free returns) — the same genuine cartridge line rebranded, as we explain in UKF8001 Owners: Your Maytag Filter Is the EveryDrop Filter 4. When you compare discount refrigerator water filters, start from that part number, not the fridge brand — the number is what decides the fit.

FAQ

Does fitting a new filter reset a Maytag filter light automatically?
No. The indicator is a reminder clock, not a sensor. Fit and flush the new filter first, then hold the Filter Reset / Water Filter button for a full 3 seconds with the door closed.

How long do I hold the Maytag filter reset button?
A full, slow 3 seconds. A quick tap is the most common reason a reset appears to fail.

My Maytag has no Filter Reset button. How do I reset the light?
Your model uses a dispenser-control combination specific to that model, or a reset inside its filter status display. Use the combination or prompt from your manual’s control section — do not guess sequences, as they can alter other settings.

Which EveryDrop filter does my Maytag take?
Check the part number printed on your old cartridge — that is the final word. If it says UKF8001, that is EveryDrop Filter 4 (EDR4RXD1); other models take other EveryDrop numbers.

The light reset fine but came back early. What does that mean?
First re-check that the cartridge is fully seated and locked, then reset once more. If it still returns early, work through the checks in our “still red” troubleshooting hub linked above before assuming the new filter is faulty — it almost never is.
