If your fridge filter is the UKF8001, your replacement is now sold under a new name: EveryDrop Filter 4, model EDR4RXD1. Same fit, same housing, same quarter-turn change. This guide walks through the full job for a French-door fridge — removing the old cartridge, fitting the new one, flushing it, and resetting the filter light — in about five minutes, with no tools.

Before you start

  • Your new filter: genuine EveryDrop EDR4RXD1 (Filter 4). It replaces UKF8001, UKF8001AXX and 4396395 (Kenmore 46-9006) and fits select Whirlpool, Maytag, Amana, KitchenAid, JennAir and Kenmore French-door and side-by-side refrigerators.
  • Check first: Filter 4 lives inside the fridge, in the upper-right corner, behind a small drop-down cover, and comes out with a quarter-turn twist. If your filter is in the base grille at the bottom and pops out with a push-button, you need Filter 3 (EDR3RXD1) instead — the two are not interchangeable.
  • Time: about 5 minutes, plus a few minutes of flushing.
  • You may need: a large pitcher for the flush water and a towel for drips.
  • You do not need to turn off the water supply.

Step 1: Open the filter cover

Open the fridge door and look at the upper-right corner of the fresh-food compartment. Lift or swing down the small filter cover — on most models it drops down and the old cartridge lowers with it or is exposed behind it.

Step 2: Twist out the old filter

Grip the old cartridge, turn it a quarter-turn counter-clockwise, and pull it straight out of the housing. A small amount of water may drip as it releases — that is normal, the housing seals itself automatically.

Step 3: Prepare the new filter

Remove the new EDR4RXD1 from its sealed packaging and take the protective cover off the O-rings. Check the O-rings are smooth and properly seated — a dry or twisted O-ring is the most common cause of a slow leak after a change.

Step 4: Install the new filter

Line the new cartridge up with the housing, push it in, and turn it a quarter-turn clockwise until it stops and feels locked. Close the filter cover. The cartridge must be fully turned and locked — a half-seated Filter 4 is the usual reason for slow flow, sputtering, or a drip inside the compartment.

Step 5: Flush the system (do not skip this)

A new filter holds loose carbon particles and trapped air. Before drinking:

  • Run the water dispenser and discard about 2–3 gallons of water (roughly 3–4 minutes of dispensing, in 30-second bursts to protect the dispenser valve).
  • Cloudy water or sputtering at the start is trapped air leaving the line — it clears as you flush.
  • Throw away the first batch of ice as well.

Step 6: Reset the filter light

A new filter does not reset the indicator by itself:

  • On most Whirlpool-family models, press and hold the “Water Filter” or “Filter Reset” button for 3 seconds until the indicator turns green or resets.
  • On models without a dedicated button, the reset is a dispenser-control combination specific to the model — check the control section of your manual.

Troubleshooting

  • Water flow is slow right after the change: the cartridge is usually not fully locked. Open the cover, give it a firm quarter-turn until it stops, and flush another gallon to clear the air.
  • The light will not reset: hold the reset button a full 3 seconds. If it stays red, remove and re-seat the filter, then reset again.
  • A drip inside the fridge after changing: remove the cartridge, check the O-rings are clean and seated, and re-install with a full quarter-turn.

When to change it next

Replace the EDR4RXD1 every 6 months or about 200 gallons, whichever comes first. Write the month on a piece of tape on the cartridge when you install it, and set a phone reminder for 6 months later. One genuine filter costs $39.99 here with free US shipping — versus $59.99 at the official brand store, and even their subscription price is $48 — and a multi-pack means the next change is already in the cupboard when the light turns red.

FAQ

Is EDR4RXD1 exactly the same fit as UKF8001? Yes. UKF8001 and UKF8001AXX are the previous part numbers for the same Filter 4 cartridge now sold as EDR4RXD1. The housing and quarter-turn fitting are unchanged.

Do I need to turn off the water to change it? No. The housing seals automatically when the filter is removed.

How much water do I flush after installing? About 2–3 gallons, until the water runs clear and steady, and discard the first batch of ice.

How long does Filter 4 last? About 6 months or 200 gallons, whichever comes first. Slow flow and chlorine taste returning are signs it is overdue.

What if I ordered Filter 4 but my fridge takes Filter 3? Do not force it — the cartridges are not interchangeable. Our 30-day free returns policy covers an unopened wrong filter with a prepaid label; contact us and we will help you confirm the right model before you re-order.
