Filter Light Still Red After a New Filter? Reset Steps for Whirlpool, Maytag, KitchenAid and JennAir
You did everything right: old filter out, new filter in, water flushed. And the little light is still red. Before you assume the new filter is faulty — it almost certainly is not — understand what that light actually is: on Whirlpool-family fridges (Whirlpool, Maytag, KitchenAid and JennAir) it is a timer-and-flow reminder, not a sensor that sniffs your new cartridge. Installing a filter does not reset it. You reset it, by hand, like this.
The reset that works on most Whirlpool-family models
- Make sure the new filter is fully seated (see the re-seat check below if you are not sure).
- Close the fridge door.
- Find the “Water Filter” or “Filter Reset” button on the dispenser or interior controls.
- Press and hold it for a full 3 seconds — count it out; a quick tap does nothing.
- Release when the indicator turns green, goes out, or the status display resets.
That is the whole job on most models, and it is the same step used at the end of each of our model-specific replacement guides.
Still red? Work through these four checks in order
- You held it too briefly, or with the door open. The most common cause by far. Close the door, press, and hold a slow three seconds. Many panels ignore a short press entirely.
- The filter is not fully seated. A cartridge that is a quarter-turn short can let water through while the fridge still behaves as if nothing changed. Remove the filter, re-insert it firmly until it is fully locked, then repeat the 3-second reset. Our replacement guides flag exactly this fix because it works so often. Slow flow after a change is often the same seating issue — see our 6 fixes for slow water flow after changing the filter: https://discountedfilterstore.com/slow-water-flow-after-filter-change/

- Your model has no dedicated reset button. Some Whirlpool-family models reset through a combination of dispenser controls instead of a single button. That combination is specific to the model — check the control section of your manual rather than guessing button sequences from the internet, because the wrong sequence can change other settings.
- You reset it before changing the filter — or the light is for something else. Resetting early just restarts the reminder clock against an old filter; change the filter first, then reset. And if a different warning (temperature, door alarm) is lit, that is a separate issue — this guide only covers the water filter status light.
Why you should not just ignore a red light
Owners who give up on the reset lose the only reminder they have. Six months from now there will be no cue at all, and an overdue filter is exactly how you get slow flow, tired taste and small ice — the problems our troubleshooting readers keep writing in about. Thirty seconds now keeps the next change on schedule. Which filter should the light be timing?
If the red light made you realise you do not actually know which cartridge your fridge takes, match it before the next order: Filter 2 (EDR2RXD1, also 9082 / W10413645A) serves many Whirlpool, Maytag, Amana, KitchenAid, JennAir and Kenmore models with an interior upper-right filter compartment — but the part number printed on your old cartridge is always the final word. FAQ
Does a new filter reset the light automatically? No. On Whirlpool-family fridges the indicator is a reminder you reset manually after the change — hold the Water Filter / Filter Reset button for 3 seconds with the door closed.
I held the button and it is still red. Is my new filter bad? Almost certainly not. Re-seat the filter so it is fully locked, close the door, and hold the reset for a full, slow 3 seconds. That sequence clears the great majority of “still red” cases.
My fridge has no Filter Reset button. What now? Your model uses a dispenser-control combination specific to that model. Use the combination in your manual’s control section — do not guess sequences, as they can alter other settings.
Can I reset the light without changing the filter? You can, but you should not: the reminder then runs against an old, spent cartridge and you lose your only cue for the real change date.
Does this apply to Maytag, KitchenAid and JennAir fridges too? Yes — they are Whirlpool-family brands and use the same reset approach on most models, with the same model-specific exception for fridges without a dedicated button.
