How to Replace the EveryDrop Filter 1 (EDR1RXD1) and Reset the Filter Light
Replacing the EveryDrop Filter 1 (EDR1RXD1) takes about five minutes, needs no tools, and is the single best thing you can do for the taste of your water and ice. This step-by-step guide covers removing the old filter, fitting the new one, flushing it correctly, and resetting the filter light so the reminder works properly for the next six months.
Before you start
- Your new filter: genuine EveryDrop EDR1RXD1 (Filter 1). It replaces the old part number W10295370 / W10295370A and fits select Whirlpool, Maytag, Amana, KitchenAid and JennAir refrigerators.
- Time: about 5 minutes, plus a few minutes of flushing.
- You may need: a large pitcher or container for the flush water, and a towel for drips.
- You do not need to turn off the water supply.
Step 1: Find the filter
Filter 1 is a push-button style cartridge. Depending on your model it sits in one of two places:
- In the base grille at the bottom front of the fridge, or
- Inside the fridge, in the upper-right area, behind a small filter cover door.
Step 2: Remove the old filter
- Base grille models: press the eject button on the left of the filter cap, pull the filter straight out, then twist the cap off the old cartridge and keep the cap — you will reuse it.
- Interior models: open the filter cover door; the old filter releases and pops slightly out as the door opens. Pull it straight out when the door is fully open.
A small amount of water may drip — that is normal.
Step 3: Prepare the new filter
Take the new EDR1RXD1 out of its packaging and remove the protective covers from the O-rings. Check the O-rings are seated properly. If you are reusing a base-grille cap, twist the cap onto the new cartridge.
Step 4: Install the new filter
Align the filter with the housing (the arrow on the cartridge points up on interior models) and slide it in firmly until it clicks or the cover door starts to close on its own. Push the cover door fully closed until it snaps. The filter must be fully seated — a half-seated filter is the most common cause of slow flow and leaks after a change.
Step 5: Flush the system (do not skip this)
A new filter contains loose carbon particles and trapped air. Before drinking:
- Run the water dispenser and discard about 2–3 gallons of water (roughly 3–4 minutes of dispensing, in 30-second bursts to protect the dispenser valve).
- The water may look cloudy or sputter at first — that is trapped air leaving the line, and it clears as you flush.
- Throw away the first batch of ice as well.
Step 6: Reset the filter light
If you skip this, the light stays red even with a brand-new filter:
- On most Whirlpool-family models, press and hold the “Water Filter” or “Filter Reset” button for 3 seconds until the indicator turns green or resets.
- On models without a dedicated button, check the dispenser control section of your manual — the reset is a button combination specific to the model.
Troubleshooting
- Water flow is slow right after the change: the filter is usually not fully seated. Push it in again until it clicks, and make sure you flushed enough water to clear the air.
- The light will not reset: hold the reset button a full 3 seconds with the door closed. If it still stays red, remove and re-seat the filter, then reset again.
- Water tastes odd for a day: flush another gallon. New carbon can affect taste briefly; it should taste clean within the first day of normal use.
When to change it next
Replace the EDR1RXD1 every 6 months or 200 gallons, whichever comes first. A simple trick that works: when you install a filter, write the month on a piece of tape on the cartridge and set a phone reminder for 6 months later. One filter costs $39.99 here with free US shipping — versus $59.99 at the official brand store — and a multi-pack means the next change is already in the cupboard when the light turns red.
