Description

GE MWF Water Filter Replacement

The GE MWF water filter replacement is the cartridge behind the water dispenser and ice maker in generations of GE, Hotpoint and Kenmore refrigerators. It is one of GE’s most widely used SmartWater cartridges, which is why so many owners open their refrigerator, read “MWF” or “MWFP” on the old cartridge, and come looking for exactly this filter. If that is the number on the filter you are taking out, this is the filter your refrigerator was built to use.

Inside the MWF is an activated carbon filtration block. As tap water passes through it, the carbon works on the two things people actually taste in refrigerator water: the chlorine taste and odour that municipal treatment leaves behind, and the sediment that can make water look cloudy and ice come out hazy instead of clear.

The MWF is rated for 300 gallons of filtration — about 6 months in a typical household. Changing it is a bare-hands job: no water shut-off, no tools, under a minute once you know where the cartridge sits.

Why Choose the GE MWF Water Filter

The MWF has stayed in production across so many GE refrigerator generations because it solves the everyday problem simply: water and ice that taste clean, from a cartridge anyone can change. Buyers search for it by name — or by its newer name, MWFP — because they want the replacement that fits properly and keeps working for its full rated life.

A few practical reasons this cartridge earns its place. First, fit: the MWF is shaped for the MWF filter housing, so it twists in and seats the way the original did — no adapters, no trimming, no forcing. A filter that does not seat correctly can leak or let unfiltered water bypass the carbon, so the exact fit matters more than any other feature. Second, capacity: 300 gallons is a real working rating — a household that fills glasses, water bottles, coffee makers and ice trays every day gets roughly six months before the carbon is spent. Third, simplicity: nothing to plumb in, nothing to wire up, nothing to program. The refrigerator does the work; the cartridge just has to be fresh.

There is also the matter of timing. A carbon filter does not stop working all at once — it fades. Taste creeps back, ice picks up freezer odours, and flow can slow as the media loads with sediment. Replacing the MWF on its six-month rhythm keeps you ahead of that fade instead of reacting to it.

Compatible Refrigerator Brands

The MWF fits selected GE, GE Profile, Hotpoint and Kenmore refrigerators that specify the MWF cartridge. The reliable check is always the same: read the label on the cartridge already in your fridge. If it says MWF, MWFP or one of the older numbers in the Replaces list below, this is your filter.

GE Refrigerators

The MWF is a standard fitment across a long run of GE refrigerator models — side-by-side, French door and bottom-freezer designs from the years when the MWF was GE’s main SmartWater cartridge. If your GE manual or the label on your current filter names the MWF or MWFP, you are in the right place.

GE Profile Refrigerators

Many GE Profile models from the same era use the same MWF housing. Where the cartridge you remove reads MWF or MWFP, this replacement drops straight in.

Hotpoint Refrigerators

Hotpoint refrigerators built on GE platforms commonly take the MWF too — models specifying the MWF, GWF or the older FX-series numbers below use this cartridge.

Kenmore Refrigerators

Selected Kenmore refrigerators manufactured on GE platforms also specify the MWF. The label on your existing cartridge is the final word: if it matches any number in the Replaces list, this filter fits.

Replaces: MWF, MWFP, MWFA, GWF, GWFA, GWF06, FXRC, FXRT, MXRC, HXRT. GE renamed and renumbered this cartridge family several times over its life, and those older part numbers all point to the same housing and the same replacement: the MWF you see here. If your old cartridge reads any of those numbers, order with confidence.

What the MWF Reduces — and How Activated Carbon Works

The MWF’s job is taste, odour and clarity. Municipal water is treated with chlorine to keep it safe on its way to your home, and that chlorine is exactly what you taste in a glass of refrigerator water and in melting ice. The activated carbon block inside the MWF takes that chlorine taste and odour back out at the point of use.

Activated carbon works by adsorption. The carbon is processed to contain a vast network of microscopic pores, giving a small cartridge an enormous internal surface area. As water flows across that surface, chlorine compounds and the organic compounds behind many tastes and odours are held on the carbon. At the same time, the dense carbon block physically traps sediment particles — the fine grit that makes water pour cloudy and ice freeze white and hazy. Water goes in tasting of treatment; it comes out tasting of water.

Two honest limits are worth knowing. First, carbon has a finite capacity: every gallon uses a little of it, which is why the 300-gallon, six-month rating exists and why an overdue filter quietly stops doing its job even though water still flows. Second, the MWF is a taste-and-odour cartridge — it makes your water and ice taste clean and look clear, and that is the standard it should be judged by.

Fresh Water for Everyday Use

Think about how many times a day your household touches the dispenser. Morning glasses of water. The coffee maker. Water bottles filled for school, work and the gym. Cooking water for pasta, rice and soups, where chlorine taste has nowhere to hide. Ice for everything from soft drinks to smoothies. A fresh MWF sits behind all of it.

A household that runs the dispenser constantly will spend a cartridge’s capacity faster than one that rarely does; the 300-gallon rating and the six-month guide are two ways of measuring the same working life, and whichever you reach first is your signal to change. Heavy-use homes tend to notice an overdue filter first in the ice — cubes that come out cloudy or carrying a faint freezer taste. A fresh cartridge restores clear, neutral ice and water that gets out of the way of whatever you are drinking. Keeping sediment out of the dispenser and ice-maker line is also kinder to the parts of the refrigerator you cannot see.

Easy to Replace

Changing the MWF takes about a minute and needs nothing but your hands. On most models the cartridge sits at the back of the top shelf area of the fresh-food compartment. Follow these steps:

  1. Find the cartridge — the white canister-style filter at the back of the top shelf area, usually with its label facing out.
  2. Have a small towel handy. A few spoonfuls of water can spill when the old cartridge comes out; that is normal.
  3. Twist the old cartridge anti-clockwise and pull it down and out of the housing. It should release with a firm quarter-to-half turn — steady pressure is enough, do not force it.
  4. Read the old label before you bin it. Confirm it says MWF, MWFP or one of the Replaces numbers above.
  5. Push the new MWF up into the housing and twist clockwise until it is snug and stops — seated and secure, not loose and not strained.
  6. Flush the new cartridge (next section) — do not skip this step.
  7. Reset the filter indicator light if your model has one (also covered below).

No step requires the water supply to be turned off on standard MWF models, and no tools are involved. If your manual shows a swing-down filter cover or a different location, follow it for the access step — the twist-out, twist-in change itself is the same.

Flushing and Resetting the Filter Light

Flushing is the step that turns a fitted cartridge into a working one. A brand-new carbon block contains loose carbon fines and trapped air. Run about 1.5 to 2 gallons of water through the dispenser and discard it — fill a large jug, empty it, and repeat. Grey or cloudy water and some sputtering at first are normal; that is the fines and air clearing. Afterwards, discard the first batch of ice, since it is made from water that sat in the new cartridge during the change.

Once the water runs clear, reset the filter indicator so the fridge counts the new cartridge’s life from today. On most GE models, press and hold the “Reset Water Filter” or “Filter Reset” button (on the dispenser panel or inside the fresh-food compartment, depending on model) for about three seconds until the light changes. If your panel is laid out differently, your manual has the exact button — the principle is the same: fit first, flush, then reset. And write the change date on the cartridge label while you are there; six months from now, that date is the reminder that actually works.

Pack Sizes and Value

The MWF is sold in four pack sizes, all with free US shipping on any amount — there is no minimum order to qualify:

  • 1-Pack — $38.99 ($38.99 per filter): the standard six-month change.
  • 2-Pack — $88.99: a full year of filters in one order — one to fit today, one on the shelf for the next change.
  • 3-Pack — $118.99: eighteen months of coverage.
  • 4-Pack — $158.99: two full years of MWF cartridges in a single delivery.

The value in a multipack here is convenience and continuity rather than a per-filter discount: shipping is free on every pack, and having the next filter in the cupboard is what keeps changes on schedule. Most overdue filters are not a knowledge problem — they are a “we ran out” problem.

A Reliable Choice for Clean Water

If your refrigerator is one of the many GE, Hotpoint or Kenmore models built around the MWF, there is no mystery to solve. Match the label, twist the old one out, twist this one in, flush it, and your water and ice are back to tasting the way they should for another 300 gallons. It is one of the smallest pieces of maintenance in your kitchen, and one of the most noticeable when it is overdue. (Running a second GE fridge? Other GE models take the slim GSWF, the MSWF, or the newer XWF instead.)

FAQ’s

Here are the frequently asked questions about this product.

What is the GE MWF water filter?

The MWF is GE’s SmartWater refrigerator water filter cartridge — an activated carbon filter that reduces chlorine taste and odour and traps sediment, fitted to generations of GE, Hotpoint and Kenmore refrigerators.

Is the MWF the same as the MWFP?

Yes. MWFP is the newer name for the same cartridge. If your old filter reads MWF or MWFP, this replacement fits the same housing and does the same job.

Which refrigerators does the MWF fit?

Selected GE, GE Profile, Hotpoint and Kenmore refrigerators that specify the MWF cartridge. It replaces MWF, MWFP, MWFA, GWF, GWFA, GWF06, FXRC, FXRT, MXRC and HXRT — check the label on the filter you are removing to be certain.

How long does the MWF last?

It is rated for 300 gallons, which is about 6 months in a typical household. Replace it at whichever point you reach first, or sooner if taste returns or flow slows.

Do I need to turn off the water or use tools to change it?

No. On standard MWF models the change is by hand only: twist the old cartridge anti-clockwise and pull it down, push the new one up and twist clockwise until snug, then flush 1.5 to 2 gallons and reset the filter light.

Why does my water look cloudy right after fitting a new filter?

That is loose carbon fines and trapped air washing out of the new cartridge. Flush the full 1.5 to 2 gallons through the dispenser and discard the first batch of ice — the water should then run clear.
